数日前に、体重10kg程度の超小型のブタが開発された、という新聞記事があった。

これまではペット用のミニブタでも体重20〜40kg程度だったというから、生で見たら相当に小さいのではないか。
ブタの先祖はイノシシで、イノシシを家畜として馴化し、交配を重ねることで、今日のブタになったらしい。
「もっと肉を摂れるようにしたい」、「もっと飼いやすくしたい」、「もっと旨くしたい」、「もっと子どもを生むようにしたい」、「もっと小さくしたい」等々、品種改良を重ねてきたご先祖様達の野望と工夫としぶとさには脱帽である。
品種改良といえばイヌの多様化というのもまた凄いもので、遺伝子解析でたどると、あれらの先祖は全てオオカミだったのだそうだ。
*1チワワも、スピッツも、セントバーナードも、柴犬も、コリーも、全てオオカミだったのである。交配に交配を重ねた結果、ああいうことになった。
*2もっとも、チワワはサイズは極端に小さくなったが、まだその風貌にはオオカミ的なところが残っていると思う。
ブルドッグやチャウチャウとなるとオオカミ的なところがだいぶ後退した印象だ。

*5イヌという生物種は、人類がいなければ存在しえなかったらしい。
遺伝子改変技術が取り沙汰されることがあるけれども、生物種の改造という点では、長い時間をかけた交配のほうがはるかに凄まじいことをやってきたように思う。
何たってアナタ、狆もダックスフンドも、オオカミだったのだ。人類、恐るべし。
